The idea

Tabletop wargames like Warhammer 40,000 are a lot of fun, but the rules can be intimidating for new players, and games slow down when every attack needs a handful of dice and some mental arithmetic.

Warroll is a guided companion that follows the real attack sequence, from hit rolls to wounds, saves and damage, so players can focus on decisions and tactics. It installs like an app on any phone or tablet, works offline, and lets two players share a live game room.

Features

What we built

Guided dice roller

Shooting, combat, charge and battle-shock rolls that carry successful hits into wounds, saves and damage automatically.

Shared game rooms

Both players join the same room and see score, Command Points, battle round and game stage update in real time.

Themed dice bag

Faction-style dice themes, with a purchase and entitlement layer designed in from the start.

Installable and offline-ready

A progressive web app that installs to the home screen and keeps working at the gaming table.

Built for beginners

Common game flow kept close at hand, so newer players spend less time checking rules and more time playing.

Free, community-supported

No ads or paywalls; players who love it can support development through Buy Me a Coffee.

Under the hood

Technology

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Vite
  • Progressive Web App
  • Cloudflare Workers
  • Durable Objects
  • WebSockets

What we learned

  • Durable Objects make real-time features surprisingly affordable. Each game room is a single, stateful object at the edge, with no servers to manage.
  • Start from the user's real workflow. Modelling the actual attack sequence, rather than a generic dice bucket, is what makes the app genuinely useful.
  • Design monetisation in early, even for a free product. A clean entitlement layer means paid features can be added later without a rewrite.
